Behind Kenneth is WO Don Gallop (a repatriated POW - see text below) and behind him is Gnr Jack Summerfield.
Behind Reuben is L/Cpl Sidney Kent (also a repatriated POW) followed by more members of the Armed Services, the ATS, Civil Defence, Home Guard and various other local organisations.

A young Jim Booker with his parents, Jane & Ron. Jim says: Centrefold Jim!: At the end of WW2, The Daily Mirror wanted a ‘feel good’ story to celebrate VE Day so they sent a photographer to Shoreham and he took a photo of my parents, Ron and Jane Booker ‘ringing’ the bells with baby me on the table!! My elder brother Peter became a bellringer, as did I, and we have had all four of us ringing at the same time later on when I was old enough. Was published in the Daily Mirror. |

This shows the 1937 Buick used by the village Auxiliary Fire Service in the Second World War, close to their base on the site of the former Townfield Cottages, in the High Street south of Crown Road. It’s thought those in the picture may include leading fireman Dan Ashby, plus Reg Lawrence, Stan Santer and Jim Wood. They are towing a trailer-mounted water pump.
