Kelly's Directories
Kelly's Directories were a kind of Yellow Pages of their day. Towns and villages were listed alphabetically and each town or village entry consisted of a short description of the village, a population count, amenities, and a list of the local gentry, landowners, clergy, and traders. In the 1830s, several parishes were listed together, for instance in 1839 the entry for Shoreham includes the parishes of Otford, Kemsing, Ightham, Wrotham and Seal. Entries were listed alphabetically by trade. By the 1850s, Shoreham had a page all to itself and entries were listed alphabetically by surname.
What follows here are transcripts from original copies of Kelly's Directories. The 1891 entry includes the description of the village as it is written in the book. They have been transcribed rather than photographed in order to make them accessible to internet search engines.
